jonkate625june232009Why does our culture become so obsessed when tragedy occurs in the lives of others?  Take for instance the divorce of Jon and Kate from TLC’s reality show – Jon and Kate Plus 8.  The recent announcement of their divorce brought about the highest ratings EVER for TLC.  Let me restate that, The HIGHEST Ratings EVER for TLC.  It is difficult to image the TLC executives feeling sad about the breakup of a family, when they are relishing in the high ratings.

The show will likely go on for a few more seasons because of this added dynamic which is sure to continue to spice things up and keep the high ratings.  However, it is sad to think about the hurt of a family and the pain the children will suffer from such unfortunate events, all out in the open for the public to gossip about.  Reality television seems to be having devastating effects on many of those who participate in it.  The instant stardom is often followed by an even faster downfall or tragedy, and the fan base plus the TV executives are all right there to cheer on the tragedy.
